Finding a filament's transmission distance

The defaults in the list are typical for ordinary PLA and fine for a first print. TD tells how quickly a filament hides what is underneath; when the colors matter, it pays to check it.

Test tileall filaments of this print at once, about 15 minutes

A small print with one patch for every height your picture uses – same filaments, same swaps, same base. In a quarter of an hour you see the real colors. Photograph the tile and the app works out the transmission distance of every filament in it at once.

A single filament

Accurate measurementone filament precisely, with a test strip
  1. The strip has 10 steps, thinnest first. Bare base stays visible along one edge. Find the first step where the base no longer shows through – it looks the same as the thickest one.

Quick estimatewithout printing, from the color

A rough estimate from color: dark and grey colors cover sooner, light and saturated ones later. The real value is commonly off by a factor of two, more for whites – measure the filament for a print that matters. Newly added filaments get it automatically and it follows the color until you type a number.

Filament catalog

Click a filament to add it to yours. Prusament, Polymaker and 3D-Fuel come with colors and transmission distances from the maker; for other brands the transmission distance is estimated from the color.

A label photographed up close and straight, with the barcode in the shot, works best. In a photo of a whole spool the print is harder to read, and the color of the plastic depends on the light.

ColorTD

TD (transmission distance): the higher, the more translucent. It is ten times the thickness that already covers what is below (1.6 mm = covers in two 0.08 mm layers).

Brand missing? Only a few manufacturers publish transmission distances so far. Add the filament by hand – the value is estimated from its color, or you can .

For the chosen printer you get a ready-made project: layers, 100% infill, one wall and the filament changes already set. The choice is remembered.

The app is still in development

Tintstack works and you can print with it, but it is still being tuned. The colour preview may not match the print exactly and some things may still change. Try your settings on a small print before starting a big one.
